Breast Lift
Over the years, factors such as pregnancy, nursing, and the force of gravity take their toll on a woman's breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose their shape and firmness and begin to sag. Breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts. Having breast lift surgery at our Provo, Utah practice can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple.
Why Breast Lift?
Our breast lift patients from Salt Lake City, Provo, Orem and throughout Utah and the surrounding states, typically want to improve the appearance of breasts that sag and droop for reasons such as:
- Dramatic weight loss
- Loss of elasticity due to age
- Changes after pregnancy and breastfeeding
If the breasts are small or have lost volume – for example, after pregnancy – we may recommend breast augmentation for Salt Lake City and Provo women who want to achieve a more complete enhancement. Breast augmentation in conjunction with mastopexy can increase both the firmness and size of the breasts. For other women, a lift may be combined with breast reduction to both elevate and resize the breasts.
About the Procedure
Breast lift surgery raises and reshapes sagging breasts by removing excess skin and repositioning remaining tissue and nipples. The surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure at the on-site Riverwoods Surgery Center in Provo. Dr. Rose performs this surgery using general anesthesia. The incisions for mastopexy may encircle the areola, descend vertically down the front of the breast or along the underside of the breast. The extent of the incisions will depend on the amount of lift that is required. If a breast lift is combined with breast reduction, liposuction near Salt Lake City may also be used to remove excess fat deposits.
After this 1 to 3 hour procedure, there will be some bruising, swelling, and discomfort for which pain medication will be prescribed. Most patients take a week off from work, and can resume more strenuous activities after about a month. Swelling will continue to subside in the weeks following surgery and scars will gradually fade.
