Migraine Surgery

Every year, an estimated 28 million people in the United States suffer from migraine headaches resulting in a collective loss of 112 million workdays and $14 billion in productivity. The use of medications for migraine headache relief has helped migraine sufferers to a certain degree, but the patient generally has to endure symptoms until their medications take effect. Also, patients generally endure an array of side effects associated with these medications. The discovery that a revolutionary new surgery can greatly decrease or eliminate migraine headaches has given hope to those who suffer from this debilitating disorder.

A New Approach to Migraine Treatment

Dr. Kevin Rose is one of the few board-certified plastic surgeons in the Salt Lake City area who specializes in migraine headaches. He offers a pioneering surgical approach at his Provo, Orem and Salt Lake City, Utah migraine clinic that offers relief to migraine headache sufferers. A close connection between specific areas that plastic surgeons work with for cosmetic enhancement and trigger sites for migraine headaches was discovered by Dr. Bahman Guyuron. After a great deal of research, this discovery has led to a revolutionary new approach to treating those who suffer from migraine headaches.

Dr. Rose met, did research, and trained with Dr. Guyuron in Ohio at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic & the University Hospitals of Cleveland. Dr. Rose takes extreme care in working with each patient and their referring neurologist or family practice physician. The results have been dramatic in reducing or eliminating the frequency and severity of migraine headaches. This relief has positive and far reaching effects on each patient, their family, friends, co-workers and others whose lives are touched by a migraine sufferer.

Articles

For those wishing to learn more about the surgical treatment of migraines and clinical success, please review the following articles authored by Bahman Guyuron, MD, who Dr. Rose trained and did research with at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic and the University Hospitals of Cleveland.

  • Comprehensive Surgical Treatment of Migraine Headaches: This journal article on surgical treatment of migraine headaches reviews a study of the efficacy of surgical deactivation of migraine headache trigger sites. The study found that most patients experienced significant reduction in migraine headache frequency, duration and intensity following surgery.
  • Five-Year Outcome of Surgical Treatment of Migraine Headaches: This journal article presents a study of the long-term efficacy of surgical deactivation of migraine headache trigger sites. The study shows that following surgery, patients experience a success rate of over 90 percent in reducing and/or eliminating the frequency and severity of migraine headaches after 5 years.

About the Process

Dr. Rose will meet with a patient during an initial consultation and discuss their specific set of circumstances. Dr. Rose will then begin a series of injections using BOTOX®, as a diagnostic tool, in specific trigger sites. One site is injected at a time, with one month in between injections. The patient will begin to track their migraine headaches with the use of a calendar. Variables such as frequency, severity, location and duration of migraine headaches are tracked each day for one month. This process is continued for two to three months, depending on the number of responding trigger sites for each patient. This information gives Dr. Rose the necessary data he needs to further diagnose a patient and predict the likely outcome of surgery.

Some patients who observe a significant reduction in frequency and severity of migraine headaches with the use of BOTOX are considered excellent candidates for surgery. The surgery does on a permanent basis what the BOTOX does on a temporary basis. For other patients, continued treatment with BOTOX for migraines is a more appropriate option.

The result being reported from patients following surgery is a significant reduction or elimination in migraine headache frequency, severity/intensity and duration. This is truly a revolutionary approach to treating migraine headaches. Dr. Rose is a 'pioneer' in bringing this surgical approach to Utah and the western region.

Dr. Rose,
Your talent, skill and an eye for changing the droopy old saggy breasts, the flab, the Buddha belly and rolls that were all around my torso and thighs, is something that is beyond my ability to describe. All I can say is that what you did was remarkable...I feel that the results are incredible. You are indeed more than just talented with your plastic surgery skills, you are also gifted with a kindness and tender personality.
Most sincerely,
C
