Sometimes, treating breast cancer involves removing all or part of one or both breasts. While this may be a necessary and life-saving measure, it is nevertheless traumatic. Breast reconstruction at the Provo, Utah practice of Dr. Kevin Rose can help a woman to regain a sense of normalcy after mastectomy or lumpectomy by allowing her to move forward without an obvious reminder of her illness.
Why Breast Reconstruction?
Women who lose their own breast(s) to cancer treatment choose breast reconstruction for a variety of very personal reasons including:
- To have symmetrical, natural looking breasts
- To avoid the need for prosthetics
- To feel “whole” after cancer treatment
Dr. Rose can form a new breast for a patient either at the time of mastectomy (immediate reconstruction), or at some point after (delayed reconstruction). The new breast can be formed using an implant during breast augmentation in Salt Lake City, or in some cases, a flap of the patient’s own tissue.
About the Procedure
There are numerous options for breast reconstruction for Salt Lake City, Orem and Provo patients who choose Dr. Rose. Depending on whether you choose reconstruction with an implant, or a flap procedure, the surgery can take from 2 to 5 hours. This procedure requires general anesthesia, and may be performed on either an outpatient or an inpatient basis, depending on the extent of the surgery.
Patients will experience discomfort, bruising, and swelling following surgery, and may need to take 1 to 2 weeks or more off of work. The length of recovery depends on the type and extent of the reconstruction, and whether you choose a flap procedure or breast augmentation near Salt Lake City. Dr. Rose will thoroughly discuss your options with you, and will work with you to determine the best approach to creating your new breast(s).
