Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is usually done to set prominent ears back closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears. For the most part, the operation is done on children between the ages of four and fourteen. Ears are almost fully grown by age four, and otoplasty at our Salt Lake City, Provo, and Orem, Utah area practice can help children to avoid the stigma of prominent ears.
Ear surgery on adults is also possible, and there are generally no additional risks associated with ear surgery on an older patient. For improved facial balance, rhinoplasty for Salt Lake City men and women may also be recommended.
At our clinic in Provo, otoplasty is performed to bring protruding ears closer to the head, or to make large ears smaller. This is done by removing skin and tissue through well-concealed incisions, and it is occasionally covered by insurance. As one of the standout plastic surgeons in the Salt Lake City area, Dr. Kevin Rose is committed to providing you with a cost-effective solution. He and his staff will review you or your child’s case and develop a customized, realistic plan for satisfying results.
Ear surgery in the Salt Lake City, Orem and Provo areas takes approximately 2 to 3 hours, and is typically done using general anesthesia. During recovery, patients will wear a bandage that keeps the ears wrapped comfortably but snugly against the head to aid in healing. Most patients can return to school or work in 5 to 7 days, but strenuous activities or sports must be avoided for 1 to 2 months.
