Microdermabrasion
If you are like many people, you may experience signs of aging long before you are plagued by wrinkles or sagging skin. In our 30s, 40s and beyond, more subtle concerns like sun damage, scarring and pigmentation problems may stand between us and beautiful, youthful looking skin. Microdermabrasion at our clinic in Utah can improve the appearance of:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Skin color irregularities
- Scars, such as moderate-depth acne scarring
About Your Microdermabrasion Procedure
The microdermabrasion procedure involves precisely what you would expect from the name: the upper layers of the skin (dermis) are worn away by friction (abrasion). This friction is created by a rough-surfaced diamond wheel that rotates rapidly, or by small specialized crystals, removing the top layers of the skin. When the skin heals, new skin grows to replace the damaged skin that was removed. This treatment is often chosen to complement surgical procedures such as a facelift near Salt Lake City.
The depth of the resurfacing is customized to your particular skin type and the concerns being treated. A local anesthetic may be used to numb the skin, but in cases of deeper abrasion, stronger anesthesia and/or sedation may be used. The hand-held device is passed over one small area at a time, and the pressure and the depth of the procedure is carefully monitored.
Recovery and Results
Recovery and results will vary depending on the size of the area treated and the depth of the abrasion. Skin re-growth typically takes place over 5 to 8 days, but in the meantime your skin may scab or crust over. New skin will be red or pink for 6 to 12 weeks, and will require meticulous skin care. Utah patients who undergo microdermabrasion must avoid sun exposure and wear sunscreen at all times, as the new skin is very vulnerable to sun damage and discoloration. We can recommend products from our Obagi or Nia 24 skin care lines that will help prepare your skin before microdermabrasion as well as maintain and protect it afterwards.
