Gynecomastia affects men of all ages. It can be the results of heredity, hormonal changes, obesity, or develop after using certain prescription medications.
The condition is characterized by excess fat, tissue, and skin in the breast area in men. When the condition cannot be resolved through diet and exercise, surgery is often the most effective method. Candidates for surgery should be generally healthy, and at a stable weight. Let your doctor know of any medical conditions you have or prescription medications you take, as certain conditions can affect the healing process. Our plastic surgeon will discuss surgical options and recommend a treatment plan that will smooth, trim, and reduce the look of excess male breast tissue.
Male Breast Reduction Procedure
There are two different surgical techniques that could be appropriate in male breast reduction. Each method will require either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. The two methods are:
Several small incisions will be made in the natural breast crease, near the armpit, and near the nipple. A small tube called a cannula is inserted into each of the incisions. The cannula incorporates a suction device that removes material as the cannula is moved back and forth to extract excess fat. This method is ideal for men who just need to remove excess fat.
Incision patterns for this technique vary, but can consist of a U-shaped incision around the areola. Preserving the nipple, excess skin will be removed if necessary and the incision is closed with the areola kept intact. This procedure is often the appropriate treatment for men suffering from gynecomastia.
In some cases, a hybrid treatment that combines elements of both the liposuction and excision techniques. Once the manipulation of fat and tissue is complete, the incisions are closed and bandaged. Male breast reduction surgery is typically an outpatient procedure, so you will be free to go home the same day after a short observation period.
Risks & Recovery
Some discomfort, swelling, or bruising is normal after surgery, but you will be given medication to help manage pain. All surgical procedures carry some risk, and we ensure our patients are educated about what to expect, and what to watch for after surgery.
You will be provided with detailed aftercare instructions to help you heal, and reduce the risk of infection. The surgeon will also schedule a follow-up appointment to oversee the healing process. You should be able to resume normal activities after a few weeks, depending on the surgical procedure used to create a more masculine upper body profile.
