Embrace Change with Expert Breast Reduction
When a woman’s breasts are overly large and disproportionate to the rest of her body, it can be embarrassing, painful, and distressing. Oversized breasts can make exercising and having an active lifestyle more difficult, and the added weight and movement can lead to rashes, back and shoulder pain, and practical problems related to clothing fit. Breast reduction surgery, also called reduction mammoplasty, is designed to reduce the size of the breasts and give you the opportunity to have a more active lifestyle, and more appealing breasts that now look balanced and proportionate with the rest of your body.
At The Rose Clinic in Provo, Utah, Dr. Rose and his team take pride in offering personalized care in every surgical and non-surgical treatment. Breast Reduction Procedure
The type of surgery and incision you receive will be determined by how much tissue must be removed to achieve aesthetic results. Rarely, breasts consisting primarily of excess fat rather than a large amount of loose skin or tissue, liposuction may be a method by which fat can be removed. For women undergoing tissue and skin removal, the surgical procedure is as follows:
Anesthesia
For your comfort and safety, you will be administered general anesthesia.
Incisions
There are three types of incisions that can be made during our Utah breast reduction procedure. The first option is a circular pattern around the areola. The next type of incision is a vertical “keyhole” pattern with an incision around the areola and downward toward the breast crease. The last type of incision is called an inverted T, or an anchor incision that starts above the nipple and proceeds downward, also including an incision along the breast crease. All types of incisions can preserve the nipple and areola, or even reduce the diameter of the areola to be more attractive, and to match the proportions of reduced breast size.
Removal
Once the incision is made, fat, breast tissue, and skin are removed to reduce the size of the breasts. The nipple remains attached to its blood supply and nerves to maintain sensation and, in some cases, retain the ability to breastfeed in the future. At this point the areola can also be reduced if desired. The remaining breast tissue is reshaped so a natural, full-looking breast remains.
Closing incisions
After sufficient tissue, fat, and skin are removed, the incisions are closed. Sutures are placed deep inside the tissue to join the underlying tissues and support the weight of your newly-shaped breasts. The incision lines will fade with time. You will have a medical bra to help minimize swelling.

Recovery is expected to last for several weeks, and Dr. Rose will evaluate your recommended level of physical activity during a follow-up appointment, based on your body’s natural healing processes.
