Who Qualifies for a Tummy Tuck Procedure?
A tummy tuck, called an abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and corrects stretched and split muscles. You may have loose or sagging skin as a result of:
- Pregnancy
- Significant weight loss
- Genetics or aging
- Gravity and aging
- An earlier surgical procedure in the area
A tummy tuck is not weight loss surgery. You should be at a stable weight before undergoing the procedure. You should also postpone your Utah tummy tuck procedure if you plan to have any more children as the stretching associated with pregnancy can affect your abdomen area once again. A tummy tuck can also be combined with various other cosmetic procedures such as a breast lift or liposuction in a customized mommy makeover.
Consult our surgeon to see what procedure or combination of procedures will produce the look you envision for your body.

How is Tummy Tuck Performed?
When you arrive at the surgery center for your Salt Lake City tummy tuck you will be greeted by our friendly staff and taken to the surgical area. You will then be prepped for your tummy tuck procedure. The surgery will then begin, and involves the following steps:
Anesthesia
You will be given general anesthesia by our Nurse Anesthetist to make you more comfortable during the procedure.
Incision
The incision is made horizontally across your lower abdomen near the pubic bone. The shape and length of the incision is determined based upon the extent of your procedure and the amount of skin to be removed. If there is also excess skin and tissue in the upper abdomen, another incision may be required to produce the desired look.
Modification
The underlying abdominal muscles are pulled together, reattached and secured. Excess skin is removed and the remaining skin is pulled tight. Our Salt Lake City tummy tuck procedure treats stretch marks in the stomach area where the excess skin is removed.
Finishing up
Once the muscle structures are reattached and the skin is trimmed, your incisions will be stitched and bandaged, and surgical drains placed. Some patients may not need drains depending on circumstances.
Recovery & Aftercare
You will be given a compression garment to apply pressure to the incisions and reduce swelling. Drains are in place so your body can shed the excess fluid or blood during the healing process. The surgeon will prescribe pain medication and antibiotics to reduce the likelihood of infection.
You will need to limit your physical activity during the healing process and closely follow the aftercare instructions regarding bandages and surgical drains. After the first few weeks your bandages can be removed, and your results will start to appear. During a follow-up appointment, Dr. Rose will evaluate your recommended level of activity and assess your progress. Most patients resume their normal daily routines after several weeks of healing. Your incisions will fade and your results will become more apparent as the healing process continues, revealing your new, beautiful, firm tummy.

Tummy Tuck FAQ
Are the Results of a Tummy Tuck for a Lifetime?
A tummy tuck procedure is the most effective surgical treatment to address sagging abdominal skin, tissue, and fat, or loose abdominal muscles. It is not a weight loss procedure, and patients should be at or near an ideal weight before undergoing tummy tuck surgery. The procedure is effective at smoothing the skin, addressing an unsightly bulge, and tightening stomach muscles. A tummy tuck is meant to be long-lasting as long as the patient remains active and in good health. Any weight gain after the surgery will impact your results.
Will I have Pain with a Tummy Tuck Procedure?
A tummy tuck is surgery, and there will be some discomfort and pain after surgery, as the stomach muscles are involved. It is not uncommon to feel the occasional sharp pain as there are many nerves in the area and they can be affected by any swelling and bruising from the tummy tuck surgery. In the early stages of healing, you will have prescription pain medication to keep you comfortable.
Should I Expect Any Scarring?
Even when performed by our highly-experienced and skilled plastic surgeon, scarring is inevitable with a tummy tuck procedure. When the abdominal skin is removed and tightened a scar will remain from the incision that runs from hip to hip. Placement can vary slightly, but this incision is placed below your panty line. The scar should fade in time, but may never completely disappear. Talk to us at The Rose Clinic in Salt Lake City about your concerns about scars, and how we manage this issue to help our patients achieve excellent results.
Are There Any Risks with a Tummy Tuck Surgery?
There are risks associated with surgery, so it is important to make sure you have a full medical evaluation about your health and any medical history or complications in the past that may pose a risk in undergoing surgery.
What Are the Side Effects Associated with a Tummy Tuck?
After surgery, there will be side effects as part of the natural healing process. Immediately following the surgery, you may feel tired or dizzy. Pain medication will be administered to help with any discomfort you will feel. You can expect to experience swelling and some bruising around the area as well.
How do I Prepare for Surgery?
When you prepare for tummy tuck surgery, you may be asked to stop taking certain medications such as aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs and certain supplements as these can increase the risk of excess bleeding. You will need to quit smoking. Arrange for a friend or family member to stay with you for the first night after surgery. Certain medications prescribed for pain may make you lightheaded or dizzy if you get up to get a drink or go to the bathroom – you will appreciate the help.
Does a Tummy Tuck treat Stretch Marks?
It is important to be realistic about what can be done. A tummy tuck is a good way to reduce the appearance of stretch marks that appear on the lower abdomen. However, if the stretch marks are not on the area of skin that is removed with surgery, they will remain, although smoother and less visible.
