As reported by the Migraine Research Foundation, migraine headaches are the third most prevalent illness in the world. Based on current statistics, 38 million men, women, and children in the U.S. suffer from this condition. It afflicts 18% of women, 6% of men, and 10% of children in America.
A migraine is not just a headache. It is a combination of severely incapacitating neurological symptoms.

Migraine Symptoms
For many migraine sufferers, migraines are a chronic condition that significantly diminishes their quality of life. More than 4 million adults have at least 15 migraines per month. Typical symptoms are:
- Attacks lasting 4 to 72 hours
- Recurring throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head
- One or more of the following symptoms: nausea; vomiting; visual disturbances: dizziness: extreme sensitivity to light, sound, smell, and touch; numbness or tingling in the face or extremities.
- An aura (visual disturbance) in 25% of cases, occurring before or during migraine and usually lasting less than an hour
Types of Migraine Treatments
The goal of migraine treatment is to reduce the severity and frequency of attacks, prevent headaches, avoid escalation of headache medications, reduce disability, and improve quality of life. Migraine treatments are classified into 3 basic categories: acute, preventative, and complementary.
Acute treatment
is used to stop a migraine when an attack begins. It includes prescription drugs such as Ergotamine, Triptans, and DHE 45. Over-the-counter pain relievers are also available to treat acute migraine symptoms.
Preventative treatment
for migraines includes a variety of prescription meds, including beta-blockers, antidepressants, calcium channel blockers, and neuron stabilizing agents or anticonvulsants.
Complementary treatment
does not involve drugs and is used primarily for prevention. It may involve vitamins, minerals, herbal treatments, acupuncture, yoga, meditation, tai chi, chiropractic spinal manipulation, or massage therapy.
