Determining Candidacy for Liposuction

Liposuction is an effective treatment for many people living with stubborn fatty deposits, both men and women. The incisions are smaller than other more invasive surgical procedures, and can be effective in treating larger body areas, including tummy, thighs, buttocks, and love handles. Stubborn fatty deposits can come about due to genetics, age, or remain after pregnancy.

Liposuction can be performed almost in any location on the body that has excess fat. Liposuction can be paired with other cosmetic procedures like a facelift or tummy tuck to smooth out the body’s natural contours or to enhance these procedures.

If you are considering liposuction in the Salt Lake City, Orem, & Lehi area at The Rose Clinic, you should be generally healthy and at a stable weight. Liposuction is not weight loss surgery and not appropriate for people who need to lose a significant amount of weight. If you have areas of your body that make you feel unhappy, such as fatty deposits on the tummy, buttocks, thighs, love handles, or a double chin, we urge you to speak with us about your options, and whether liposuction is the right procedure to sculpt and trim these areas, giving you a more attractive body contour.

Liposuction Procedure

When you arrive at the facility for your procedure you will be greeted by the friendly staff at The Rose Clinic, who will show you the procedure area. You will be prepped for the procedure. Once you are comfortable and ready to begin, the procedure involves the following:

Anesthesia

Dr. Rose prefers a general anesthetic to ensure that patients are completely comfortable.

Incisions

Small incisions will be made to access the area that has excess fat. Incisions are kept small and discreet and will be hidden by clothes, bathing suits, or the natural curves of the body.

Reduction

A small tube called a cannula will be used to extract the excess fat. The tube is inserted into an incision and carefully moved back and forth to dislodge the excess fat. This is repeated at each incision site.

Closing the incisions

Once the fat is removed from the treatment area, the incisions are closed and bandaged. You will be fitted with a snug garment to help minimize swelling and bruising.

Post-Procedure Care for Liposuction Patients

After the procedure is complete, you will be kept at the surgery center for a short observation period prior to returning to your home. The entire procedure can require several hours, depending on the number of body areas to be treated. For optimum healing following your liposuction surgery, before you are released, you will receive detailed aftercare instructions and prescriptions for pain medication and antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection.

Liposuction Recovery & Risks

Salt Lake City Liposuction

Most patients take approximately one week off work for the procedure. Side effects are mild and are managed with the pain medication prescribed by Dr. Rose. After the first couple weeks of recovery, you will begin to see the beautiful results of your procedure. They will usually improve with time as swelling decreases, your body heals, and gains a new, trimmer, slimmer shape. Results are improved with postoperative lymphatic massage.

Serious side effects are rare and are minimized by following our detailed aftercare instructions. Our surgeon will also schedule follow up appointments to monitor how your recovery is progressing. During follow-up appointments, Dr. Rose will also advise you about the recommended level of physical activity, based on your progress. Once the healing process is complete, our patients are typically overjoyed to experience some of the top results of liposuction Utah has to offer, and to finally achieve a slimmer, more attractive body contour.

Liposuction FAQ: Get the Facts

If you are tired of seeing excess fat on your thighs, buttocks, upper arms, back, or under your chin, liposuction may be your answer. Read some common questions and answers to get more information about liposuction in the Salt Lake City, Lehi, & Orem, UT area at the Rose Clinic.

Is liposuction a reasonable treatment for obesity?

If you are considered obese, unfortunately, liposuction is not considered an effective treatment. The quantity of excess fat is too extensive to be safely removed with this procedure. Many of our patients have undergone bariatric surgery or have successfully lost weight naturally through diet and have remaining pockets of excess fat; for these patients, liposuction can produce excellent results, along with body contouring to remove excess hanging skin.

How long will liposuction take to complete?

If you are planning to have excess fat removed with liposuction, the length of the procedure will be related to the number of areas to be treated, and the quantity of fat to be removed. A typical procedure will require several hours, typically between two and four. For smaller quantities of fat, the procedure may require less time.

When can I start exercising after lipo?

After your treatment, you will need to continue to be active to aid in blood circulation. As the days pass, your body will recover from the procedure and you will be able to do more and more – but it is advised that you avoid strenuous exercise for about four weeks, based upon your individual healing speed. Dr. Rose will monitor your progress and advise you when you can get back to your normal exercise routine.

Is liposuction painful?

Liposuction in Salt Lake City is performed with anesthesia for patient comfort. With the tumescent liposuction technique, a local anesthetic is used, and the fluid injected in the technique contains a medication to manage pain. You may experience some discomfort when the local anesthetic is injected, or when the solution is injected, but this is short-term. The procedure itself is not painful, as the area is numbed.

How do I prepare for liposuction?

As a patient, you have a few duties in preparing for your procedure. You will need lab testing, and a review of any medications or supplements you take. Some types of medications must be altered or stopped prior to your treatment. You will need to stop smoking several weeks prior to treatment, and avoid anti-inflammatory medicines such as aspirin or ibuprofen, along with blood thinners, whether prescribed or in nutritional supplements.
