As we age the skin on our face can thin and begin to sag and droop. The facial skin becomes aged, with unwanted wrinkles, creases, lines, and appears droopy and older – often far older than one feels. The condition of your facial skin is impacted by genetic factors, age, sun damage, smoking, gravity, and stress. A facelift procedure can tighten the skin on the face and restore a defined, youthful jawline for a more pleasing, attractive look – but it must be done right, and by our highly qualified Utah plastic surgeon.
Dr. Rose in Provo, Utah is experienced with facelift procedures and can help you restore a more youthful facial appearance, that appears natural rather than tight and pulled.
Is a Facelift Right for Me?
You may be a good candidate for a facelift if you:
- Have sagging skin on cheeks, jaw, and neck
- Have excess fat or skin on the neck
- Your cheeks have sagged, leaving you with a jowly look
- Have deep creases around the mouth or under the eyes.
- You feel self-conscious as your face appears tired, older, or saggy
Facelifts are common among women in their forties or older who are looking to smooth out wrinkles on their face and want to ward off the aging process. Dr. Rose has impressive artistic abilities in creating a beautiful, natural look, and can help you achieve a younger-looking face without having that “worked on” appearance.
Facelift Procedure
A facelift involves the following steps:
Anesthesia
You will be put under general anesthesia.
Incisions
There are three types of incisions based on the type of facelift, the degree the skin has aged, and your desired results. A traditional facelift involves an incision that begins near the temples in the hairline, continues around the ear, and ends near the lower scalp. The underlying muscles near the jowls and neck are pulled tight and secured, and excess skin is trimmed. A limited incision facelift uses a shorter incision that begins lower in the hairline and continues around the bottom of the ear. This type of facelift is appropriate for those who don’t have as much sagging in the facial skin. The last type is a neck lift and the incision begins near the ear lobe and continues behind the ear to the hairline and under the chin. This type of lift is used for those whose main concern is sagging skin in the neck and jawline.
Closing the incisions
Once your muscles and skin are pulled tight, your incisions will be closed. The incisions are placed so that your hair and the natural curves of your face easily hide them.
Schedule Consultation
A facelift is sometimes performed with other procedures such as a brow lift or skin resurfacing procedure. You may decide to have more than one procedure based on the facial rejuvenation you envision for yourself, and Dr. Rose will help you evaluate the appropriate treatments. Once your facelift is complete you will be given aftercare instructions and prescriptions for pain medication and antibiotics to take during the recovery.
Risks & Recovery
Any pain from the incisions is easily managed with the pain medication prescribed by our plastic surgeon. Though the healing time will vary based on the complexity of your surgery among other factors, most patients can resume their normal routines in about two weeks. Your doctor will schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure the healing process is proceeding as it should, and will let you know when you can return to more vigorous activities.
